Orthodontic Treatments for All Ages

Orthodontics For Children

Early orthodontic treatment allows your orthodontist to correct and guide your child’s jaw, create more space for crowded teeth, avoid the need for extractions later in life, and correct thumb sucking and minor speech problems. While there is no exact age for children to begin orthodontic treatment, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends visiting the orthodontist around age seven. A few things to watch for are crowded or misplaced teeth, difficulty chewing or biting, mouth breathing, thumb sucking, or popping jaws.

Orthodontics For Teens

Braces are no longer as scary as many teens may think. In fact, braces today come in a variety of styles, materials, and colors, making life with braces much easier, more comfortable, and even more stylish than in the past. There are several orthodontic treatment options for teens to choose from, including traditional metal, ceramic, and invisible braces.

Orthodontics For Adults

Orthodontic treatment is not just for teens! In fact, the American Association of Orthodontists cites that one in five orthodontic patients is over the age of 21! Today’s orthodontic treatments for adults – such as traditional braces for adults and Invisalign for adults – offer a variety of braces and appliances, such as clear braces and clear aligners, that are comfortable, esthetic, and customized to meet your needs as an adult.

Types of Orthodontic Treatment

Metal braces are the most common type of orthodontic treatment. They use stainless steel brackets connected by wires to move teeth gradually. Traditional braces are one of the most effective treatments, especially for complex bite issues and severe misalignments.

Clear aligners, such as Invisalign, are a series of custom-made plastic trays that shift your teeth over time. Clear aligners are removable for eating and brushing your teeth, and are nearly invisible when you’re wearing them.

Lingual braces are similar to traditional braces, except that they are placed on the back side of the teeth, so they can’t be seen from the front. Lingual treatments are typically just as effective as regular braces, but can be harder to clean and it may take some adjustment to get used to talking with them.

Ceramic braces work the same way as traditional metal braces. However, they use tooth-colored or clear brackets that are less noticeable and blend in with teeth, making them a popular aesthetic choice for teens and adults! The ceramic brackets are slightly more fragile, and could also stain gradually if you don’t maintain them well.

Self-ligating braces use a special clip instead of rubber bands to hold the archwire in place. This makes treatment more comfortable and reduces friction, and may be more efficient as well. However, self-ligating braces usually cost more than other types of braces.

Questions about Orthodontic Treatment

Some dental insurance plans offer partial coverage of orthodontic treatment, especially for children. It varies by provider, so call your insurance to ask about your specific benefits.

The duration of orthodontic treatment varies depending on individual needs, but for most patients lasts 18 to 24 months. Your orthodontist will provide a more accurate timeline based on your specific case.

Regardless of the type of braces you choose, it is important to avoid sticky, hard, or chewy foods, as these may damage your braces and prolong your treatment time. For more information see our full list of foods to avoid with braces.

While both braces and Invisalign can effectively straighten teeth, they have different advantages. Braces are often more suitable for complex cases and may be more cost-effective. Invisalign offers a nearly invisible alternative but may not be appropriate for all orthodontic issues. During your consultation, we’ll help you determine which option is best for your needs.
