Is there a braces “age limit”?
Many people think braces are only for teenagers. The truth is, braces work at any age! Whether you’re 7 or 70, tooth movement happens the exact same way—with gentle, consistent pressure. In fact, one out of every three orthodontic patients is an adult.

How Early Can You Start Braces?
Early braces treatment allows your orthodontist to correct and guide your child’s jaw, create more space for crowded teeth, avoid the need for extractions later in life, and correct thumb sucking and minor speech problems. While there is no exact age for children to begin orthodontic treatment, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends visiting the orthodontist around age seven. A few things to watch for are crowded or misplaced teeth, difficulty chewing or biting, mouth breathing, thumb sucking, or popping jaws.

What’s the Best Age to Get Braces?
Getting braces as a teenager is one of the best ages for treatment! By around 10 through 14 years old, most adult teeth have already come in. The jawbone is still growing during this time, with makes it easier to move teeth into the correct position. This means that braces treatment can be shorter and more efficient! Braces today also come in a variety of styles, materials, and colors, making life with braces easier, more comfortable, and even more stylish than in the past. There are even specific orthodontic treatment options designed for teens.

Are You Ever Too Old For Braces?
Orthodontic treatment is not just for teens! Whether you’re in your 30s, 50s, or 70s, you can get braces. In fact, one in three orthodontic patients today is an adult. Braces for adults can help relieve jaw pain, ease tension, and improve overall oral health. However, don’t expect as quick of a treatment as your teenager – adult bone tissue is denser, so progress is usually slightly slower. Specialized braces and treatment plans for adults can help you find braces that fit your lifestyle and fix your smile!

How Dental Braces Work
Different types of braces gradually shift your teeth into their proper positions using constant, gentle pressure. This process, known as orthodontic tooth movement, involves the breakdown and rebuilding of bone tissue around your teeth. Over time, this leads to a straighter, healthier smile and improved oral function.
The brackets are attached to the surface of each tooth, and the wires are threaded through them and held in place using bands. The orthodontist will adjust the tension of the wires during regular appointments to guide the teeth into the correct alignment. As the teeth move, the bone surrounding them also reshapes to support the new position.

What to Expect When Getting Braces

Types of Braces

Metal Braces
Traditional metal braces remain a popular and effective option for orthodontic treatment. Made from high-grade stainless steel, these braces consist of brackets attached to your teeth and connected by a thin archwire. Modern metal braces are smaller and more comfortable than ever before.

Ceramic Braces
Made from clear or tooth-colored materials, ceramic braces blend in with the natural color of the teeth, making them less noticeable. This aesthetic appeal is a major benefit for those who are self-conscious about wearing braces but still want to achieve a straighter smile.
