Braces for All Ages

For Children

Early treatment allows your orthodontist to correct and guide your child’s jaw, create more space for crowded teeth, avoid the need for extractions later in life, and correct thumb sucking and minor speech problems. While there is no exact age for children to begin orthodontic treatment, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends visiting the orthodontist around age seven. A few things to watch for are crowded or misplaced teeth, difficulty chewing or biting, mouth breathing, thumb sucking, or popping jaws.

For Teens

Braces are no longer as scary as many teens may think. In fact, braces today come in a variety of styles, materials, and colors, making life with braces much easier, more comfortable, and even more stylish than in the past. There are several treatment options to choose from, including traditional metal, ceramic, and invisible braces.

For Adults

Orthodontic treatment is not just for teens! In fact, the American Association of Orthodontists cites that one in five orthodontic patients is over the age of 21! Today’s orthodontic treatments – such as traditional braces for adults and Invisalign for adults – offer a variety of braces and appliances, such as clear braces and clear aligners, that are comfortable, esthetic, and customized to meet your needs as an adult.

Types of Braces

What to Expect When Getting Braces

Your path to a perfect smile begins with a comprehensive orthodontic evaluation. During this appointment, your orthodontist will assess your oral health, including tooth alignment, bite relationship, and jaw structure. Using advanced diagnostic tools like digital X-rays and 3D imaging, we’ll create a customized treatment plan tailored to your unique needs. We’ll discuss various treatments, from traditional metal braces to ceramic options, and give a timeline for your smile transformation.

The day you get your braces is an exciting milestone in your orthodontic treatment! Your orthodontist will thoroughly clean and prepare your teeth before carefully bonding brackets to each tooth’s enamel surface. Archwires are then threaded through these brackets and secured with elastic ligatures. This appointment typically takes 1-2 hours, during which our orthodontic team will ensure your comfort and provide detailed instructions for caring for your new appliance.

Throughout your treatment, you’ll have periodic appointments for orthodontic adjustments. During these visits, your orthodontist will evaluate your progress, replace or tighten wires, and make any necessary changes to your brackets. These adjustments are crucial for maintaining steady tooth movement and ensuring your treatment stays on schedule. You may experience slight discomfort after each adjustment as your teeth respond to the new pressure, but this typically subsides within a few days.

It is crucial to maintain good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing and flossing regularly, to prevent plaque buildup and maintain healthy teeth and gums during your treatment. Your orthodontist will provide guidance on how to properly clean and care for your braces to ensure optimal results and avoid any potential issues like tooth decay or gum disease.

Your orthodontist will carefully remove the brackets and thoroughly clean your teeth, revealing your newly aligned smile. Immediately following braces removal, you’ll be fitted for a custom retainer. This is crucial for maintaining your results, as it prevents tooth relapse by holding your teeth in their new positions while the surrounding bone and tissues stabilize. Your orthodontist will provide detailed instructions on wearing and caring for your retainer to ensure long-lasting results.

Questions about Braces

While you may experience some discomfort when braces are first placed or after adjustments, modern orthodontic techniques have greatly reduced pain associated with treatment. Any discomfort from braces is typically mild and temporary.

Treatment duration varies depending on individual needs, but most patients wear braces for 18 to 24 months. Your orthodontist will provide a more accurate timeline based on your specific case.

Regardless of the type of braces you choose, it is important to avoid sticky, hard, or chewy foods, as these may damage your braces and prolong your treatment time. For more information see our full list of foods to avoid with braces.

While both braces and Invisalign can effectively straighten teeth, they have different advantages. Braces are often more suitable for complex cases and may be more cost-effective. Invisalign offers a nearly invisible alternative but may not be appropriate for all orthodontic issues. During your consultation, we’ll help you determine which option is best for your needs.
